Of course, it wasn’t funny… there was anything funny about it at all, really. But Eddie Paulson had to laugh anyway.

It had taken a long, long time to worm his way out of the pit. He’d crawled to his truck on his belly, sweating and mewling and pleading to God or any deity that might listen for help. Eddie surmounted the insurmountable and somehow managed to pull himself up into the cab of the truck.

He’d made it. He’d fucking made it, and the key was in the ignition, all right, just like he knew it would be.

But the battery was dead.

He’d left the glove box open. The bulb inside had slowly drained the old battery until it was dead as stone.

Eddie laughed. He laughed and wept and laughed again… and his eyelids grew heavy.

The fever-dreams were waiting. They welcomed him with open arms.
